Pronewable and Rebel Development have completed the development of a battery energy storage system (BESS) in Eemshaven, near the Strekdammen wind farm. ASR Dutch Green Energy Fund I will participate in the project as the majority shareholder now that construction has started. The battery will be connected to the grid via the Strekdammen Wind Farm connection, creating a CO2-neutral and flexible energy system. The Strekdammen Wind Farm was also developed by Pronewable and Rebel Development and sold to a.s.r real estate.
Development of the battery project commenced in 2022. Pronewable and Rebel Development led the main work streams, including permitting, technical design and commercial structuring. Rebel and Pronewable have entered into a partnership with a.s.r. real estate to finance the project, with a.s.r. contributing to the final phases of development and the integration of the battery into the wind project's grid connection. The parties will continue to work together during the construction phase to ensure the optimal operation of the battery project.
The battery has a capacity of 7.5 MW and a storage capacity of approximately 24 MWh. This allows the installation to store more than three hours of electricity, which amounts to approximately 11,700 MWh per year – the equivalent of the electricity consumption of 5,200 households. Construction is expected to be completed in February 2027.
This project demonstrates how energy storage can be effectively integrated at the same location (co-location) as existing renewable energy projects. This increases the flexibility of the energy system. At Pronewable, we continue to work on the development of sustainable energy projects to accelerate the transition to a robust and climate-neutral electricity system in the Netherlands.
